With the increased focus on greenhouse gas emissions and new regulations related to EEXI and CII, forward-thinking owners are proactively looking for ways to measure their current emissions levels and the effectiveness of mitigation efforts to reduce their emissions footprint.
The Emsys-iS system, with its patented calibration-free quantum cascade laser technology, was designed to provide the industry with a smaller, more flexible analyzer. It can be applied on a wide variety of vessel, both those fitted with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) and those without emissions control equipment installed. The Emsys-PM system provides a simple and low-cost cross-stack sensor that provides both smoke density and particulate matter measurements to provide a complete emissions picture.
Emsys’ Class approved products are designed specifically for maritime and offshore applications. It is not a hybrid version of a land-based CEMs but was specifically created around the concept of being maintained by ship’s crew and needing to be highly reliable. Emsys does not need instrument air, air conditioning units or large amounts of space which make it ideal for retrofit projects or complex new-build applications where space is at a premium.
Emsys boasts a broad base of leading merchant shipping, shipyard and offshore oil and gas customers and its products are currently installed on more than 200 Cruise, Container, Bulk Carrier, General Cargo, LNG & LPG Carriers, Shuttle Tanker, Crude Oil Tanker, and Drillship vessels with a significant orderbook in the newbuild and retrofit markets. Emsys’ well proven technology accurately monitors all types of marine engine (2-stroke and 4-stroke diesels), marine boilers, waste incinerators, and gas combustion units (GCUs) and installations on open loop, closed loop, and hybrid scrubbers.
Emsys can measure NOx, SOx, CO2, CO, CH4, NH3, SO2, Opacity & PM and has a unique ‘mass emissions’ capability to help shipowners measure the total mass emissions inventory (kilograms or tonnes) of all

Emsys-iS Marine Emissions Monitor
Continuous emissions monitoring system, CEMS, Emsys-IS, Emsys Maritime, emissions monitoring retrofit, opacity monitor, smoke density monitor, methane slip, carbon monoxide monitoring, marine emissions monitoring, sox emissions monitoring, mass emissions monitoring
The iS platform is lightweight, flexible, and accurate, able to support a scrubber variant, an SCR variant, and a CEMS variant (with a Mass Emissions Reporting function as an additional option).
Basic Platform – The iS platform is designed to be a modular concept that can be expanded to accommodate further applications as required. As delivered, the system is supplied with a single laser to measure one gas across multiple exhaust stacks. This is ideal for monitoring multiple SCR’s for Ammonia (NH3) slip or methane (CH4) slip where LNG is used as a fuel.
EGCS Variant – The EGCS version is particularly suitable for retrofit applications where space is tight, measurement needs to be fast, and multiple stacks monitor from a single instrument. With only one power supply needed for a 4-point system, installation is simplified and can be done rapidly during dry-docking for scrubber installation. The scrubber variant has many other significant benefits over its competitors including return to process exhaust, no gas conditioning systems to eliminate toxic liquid waste, and a fast response time of less than 10 seconds for SO2!
MARPOL Variant – Features full NOx Technical Code compliance capability. The QCL laser measures both NO and NO2 eliminating the need for NOx Catalysts typically used in traditional CEMs type systems. Additionally, the system can be configured for scrubber and SCR applications.
Mass Emissions Variant – This enhanced variant has the capability for Mass Emissions inventory, Methane slip measurement and Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring for engine efficiency/turbocharger fouling applications. Additionally, this version can measure up to 8 points which covers most applications such as LNGC installations with engines, boilers, and GCU’s all measured.
Emsys-PM: Visible Smoke and Particulate Matter Sensor
Continuous emissions monitoring system, CEMS, Emsys-IS, Emsys Maritime, emissions monitoring retrofit, opacity monitor, smoke density monitor, methane slip, carbon monoxide monitoring, marine emissions monitoring, sox emissions monitoring, mass emissions monitoring
Emsys-PM platform is a combined Opacity (smoke density) and Particulate Matter (PM) sensor system. It can be used to monitor smoke density or PM in all types of marine diesel engines (2-stroke & 4-stroke), marine boilers (main and auxiliary), incinerators, and inert gas generators (IGG).
Emsys-PM can be calibrated to monitor smoke density in line with growing class society environmental notations, to monitor and identify maintenance issues in diesel engines, to monitor in line with localized EPA visible smoke regulations, to monitor Particulate Matter for environmentally sensitive regions such as Alaska, OCIMF accreditation, and more.
The platform can be configured as a stand-alone device which directly interfaces to the vessels automation system using MODBUS, or alternately as a discrete monitoring system with recording and reporting capability. Either configuration is capable of interfacing with Emsys-iS emissions monitoring technology, allowing a greater array of reporting formats.
Applications, Approvals and Data
Emsys’ products are approved by ABS, DNV-GL & Korean Register for every mandatory maritime air emissions regulation and can meet the requirements of most environmental Class Notations.
Applications include MARPOL Annex VI compliance, Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) ‘scrubber’ compliance, IMO Tier III NOx compliance (Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems – SCR), mass emissions measurement including methane slip, EU Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV)Regulation, US EPA Air Permit applications for deep-water drilling and Visible Smoke, Dust, and Particulate Matter measurement.
The comprehensive data package supplied allows for bi-directional communications via MODBUS with the vessels automations system, SCR/scrubber control panels. The software can generate PDF reports and trending graphs to retain emissions data onboard or transmit to shipowner/charterer/regulator.
*Sales and support for Emsys products are available from all Kian marine Stations with the exception of South Korea
